Magpul Field Case for iPhone 4S Review

Ah...tis' the season for colder temps. Yes, even down here in N. Florida!  So I was on the hunt for a case that has great grip and some decent protection. I came across the Magpul Field Case and thought I would grab a few to review. We took a look at Magpul's Executive Field Case for the iPhone 4 a while ago offering more of a clean-cut look than the Field Case. Does the Field Case offer that strong grip I was hoping for? Does it make the iPhone feel to bulky? Do photos get washed out from the camera cutout? Click for the full review after the jump!

I honestly didn't know what to expect from this case and what the polymer material would feel like. I know I was looking for a case that had decent protection and gave me a nice firm grip of the phone. To my surprise it was outstanding.

The phone felt amazing to hold and gave me a feeling of security. As much as I love the iPhone design and going caseless, sometimes I like having a case for a little protection. As you can see, the case has a nice grid pattern that gives the case that grippy feel. One plus in my opinion is that the case goes in and out of jean pockets smoothly.

The case is very simple to install. All you have to do is lay the phone in buttons first, and snap the bottom right into place. As you can see, it gives a slight lay on the table design all around the phone stainless steel band, and will not effect any screen protectors you might be using. The mute/vibrate switch is cut to fit the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S. It's a nice touch when the companies make that cutout fit both devices.

As you can see from the picture, the volume buttons and sleep/wake button are covered for more protection. The sleep/wake button gives outstanding tactile feedback. I found the volume buttons a little stiff and not as smooth to use as the sleep/wake button. I like the idea of the volume rocker, but if your like me and use the volume up button to take pics, it's really not smooth at all. The headphone jack cutout is slightly bigger than say the Apple Bumper and the SGP Neo Hybrid cases. I had no problems with fitting my 3rd party headphones. I'd also like to let everyone know that I had no problems using this case with spectra wraps from The Lucky Labs. You can slightly notice the colored wraps though the headphone jack and mute/vibrate switch area.

So far I've been giving this case a lot of praise. Is there anything that might be flawed? The only problem I've had with this case after a week of usage, is the camera cutout gave me washed out photos when using the flash. I must say it doesn't happen all the time, but it does happen occasionally. Was not too happy about that because the camera cutout is perfect in my opinion.

Another con about the case actually has nothing to do with the case itself. It's the shipping cost. The case is priced at only $9.95 (which is unheard of for quality cases) but the shipping costs $7! I ordered a few so the shipping didn't feel as bad (reaching for something to justify the shipping cost).

So do I recommend this case? Absolutely! I can honestly say that this case gives outstanding protection in a slim form factor. It feels great in the hand and love that I can use front/back/side protectors with this case. If you can live with some of your flash photos getting washed out every now and then and also don't mind overpaying for shipping, this is one outstanding case to have as an everyday case.
