Some MacBook Airs Have Slower SSDs Than Others

With useful tools such as the free Disk Speed Test found in the Mac App Store, one could easily benchmark his or hers hard drive and SSD. As it turns out, Apple is still using two different models of SSDs in the MacBook Air from Samsung and Toshiba. It is reported that all Toshiba SSDs found in any 2010 and 2011 model, 11" and 13" MacBook Air, are slower than the Samsung SSDs Apple is using. Before your heart sinks to the bottom of your stomach, check to see which SSD model you've got inside your MacBook Air by going to your About This Mac - System Report or More Info under Snow Leopard - Serial ATA. If you see the Toshiba TS128C SSD model then you've got the slower SSD that's able to perform read and writes speeds generally below 200Mbps. If you're lucky, you'll find that you've got the faster Samsung SM128C SSD.

The difference in speeds may not necessarily mean that you will notice a significant difference in your day to day usage, but if it does bother you then you should try to get a replacement.

Apple Replacing Unibody MacBook Bottoms

Apple has started up a new program called the "MacBook Bottom Case Replacement Program", and offering to replace the bottom of any affected white unibody MacBook purchased between October 2009 and April 2011 free of charge. The issue is with the bottom rubber surface of the white unibody MacBook that may separate due to issues with the glue that was used. If your MacBook is affected, you've got two options to get yours fixed. Take it into an Apple Retail Store and have it fixed there or you can do it yourself by ordering the free replacement kit online from Apple complete with screws, a screwdriver and instruction. I say do it yourself.

Miniot's Real Wood Smart Cover Replacement

Miniot's real wood Miniot Cover for the iPad 2 is the natural alternative to Apple's Smart Cover. The Miniot Cover does not use a magnetic hinge or spine yet manages to have the same exact functions as a Smart Cover. You can fold it back to make a landscape, portrait and typing stand all without using a rotating hinge. The magnets are strong and hold the Miniot Cover in place even while you hold your iPad 2 face down, shaking it like a mad man, or woman. It's smooth, it's wood, and it ships this month for €50 (about $70). See the Miniot Cover in action right after the break.

Clear Glass Back Cover For iPhone 4 Now Available

A few week ago I posted about an iPhone 4 modded with clear back and front glass covers but the problem was you had to use a paint thinner or some other way to scrub off the original black paint off of your iPhone 4's original part. That isn't something you would want to do surely. A company called Sw-Box now sells these clear back glass covers for the iPhone 4 for $18.75 a piece. That's not a bad price at all. Sw-Box claims their clear back glass covers for the iPhone 4 have metal mounting tabs just like the original iPhone 4 glass cover to screw in the bottom two screws and should perfectly fit your iPhone 4. And I thought these will show up on eBay first.

iPhone 4 Metal Edition (DIY)

If changing the back of your iPhone 4 to a different glass color cover was not enough, you might be interested in transforming it into metal or in this case brushed aluminum. The process is very easy and should take you no longer than a minute. These metal iPhone 4 back cover replacements have a slight bevel edges to them which actually hurt the cameras quality by applying a bit of black vignetting corners. Some people also noted that they have lost 1-2 bars of signal when using these metal backs on their iPhone 4. I only noticed this once in a while and it did not affect my WiFi signal at all.

You can find these replacement back covers all over eBay and on CNN.cn for under $20, not a bad deal at all considering the fit and finish is pretty fantastic minus the fact that you will have a bit of camera quality issues because of the beveled design. This will also be compatible with the Apple Bumper case leaving almost no clearance as the metal back sits flush with the edges of the Bumper case. So when you lay your iPhone 4 on a table, the metal back will actually touch the surface. If you have some doubts about doing this yourself, watch the video below and see how easy this actually is!
