LaCie XtremeKey USB 3.0 Designed To Withstand It All

LaCie's obsession for protection has brought us another marvelous, external and portable storage device with epic rugged proportions. The XtremeKey is LaCie's USB 3.0 thumb drive housed inside a tightly sealed - waterproof, fireproof and dropproof brushed aluminum enclosure which to us, actually looks like some extravagantly designed fishing weight. The 2mm-thick aluminum enclosure which is designed by French designer, Constance Guisset, can also withstand extreme pressure of 10-tons. What's more, the XtremeKey is digitally protected using AES 256-bit encryption and is small enough to tag along on your keychain. The internal 32GB or 64GB capacity options yield insanely fast data transfer speeds of up to 230Mbps via USB 3.0. LaCie's XtremeKey is currently available in a 32GB capacity for $85, while the 64GB version will be available next month.

Seagate has recently released a Thunderbolt adapter for its GoFlex series of portable external hard drives that is as big as an external hard drive on its own. The GoFlex Thunderbolt adapter works with all GoFlex drives adding a super fast Thunderbolt port with transfer speeds of up to 10GBps. Also, the GoFlex Thunderbolt adapter requires no external power to run and is compatible with any 2.5" SATA drive including SSD drives which will yield the fastest capable transfer speeds. Seagate's GoFlex Thunderbolt adapter is the most expensive interface adapter available for the GoFlex system at $99.99 and doesn't even include the necessary Thunderbolt cable which costs $50 alone.

Iomega Unleashes Mac Companion Desktop Hard Drive

Iomega has released the ultimate desktop hard drive for Mac users called the Mac Companion, the first hard drive to feature a high-powered USB port you can use to charge up that power hungry iPad of yours. You would think Iomega would somehow add a Thunderbolt port to the drive, but instead, the Mac Companion desktop hard drive packs two FireWire 800 and a pair of USB ports that act as a USB hub for your other gadgets. Iomega's Mac Companion is available in a few different flavor capacities including a 2TB 7200RPM version for $195 as well as a massive 3TB 7200RPM version running for $295. Oh yes, Western Digital has released a new Scorpio Blue 2.5" (9.5mm) internal SATA III hard drive with a massive 1TB storage capacity using only 2 platters that is compatible with all standard notebooks. The new 1TB Scorpio Blue WD10JPVT hard drive is the first 1TB 2.5" hard drive that has started shipping on the market. It isn't a Ferrari at 5400RPM, but at least it's a minor improvement over the previous, slightly thicker 12.5mm 1TB model at only 5200RPM. Western Digital has designed its Scorpio Blue behemoth to have a low power consumption for longer battery life performance and coupled it with WhisperDrive technology for quite performance. The WD Scorpio Blue 1TB 2.5" hard drive is now shipping and available at retailers for $140. Or a bit cheaper at Newegg
